Multiple fully funded PhD positions

We are looking for persons with a Dipl.-Ing. / MSc. in computer science, mathematics, software & information engineering, electrical engineering, or a similar field with a background in one (or more) following areas: systems science, distributed systems, virtualized HPC systems, data science, or environmental sensing. The candidates should already have demonstrated strong work commitment and the ability to work independently and as a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills. In ourcutting-edge project, we are pushing the boundaries of current paradigms, programming, and resilience models to develop a new generation of digital twins.

Students will work, among others, on our newly approved WWTF project AI-supported Holographic Environmental Water Monitoring (HoloWaterAI) on the foundational methods for developing digital twins in close collaboration with BOKU Wien. We expect the candidate to have strong knowledge in at least one of the following areas:

  • formal methods (e.g., model checking, temporal logic)
  • machine learning (e.g., DBNs)
  • in-situ testing
  • edge and cloud computing

Our working language is English, and there is no need to learn German, although we will encourage and support any German-learning ambitions. There are no teaching duties unless they are desired. We offer competitive salaries for WWTF project staff (14 x per annum): 30h per week € 2,684.10 gross.

Postdoctoral researcher in High Performance Computing, Computational Sustainability, and Cloud/Edge Systems

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher to engage in cutting-edge scientific research in the fields of High Performance Computing, Computational Sustainability, and Cloud/Edge Systems. We are particularly interested in candidates with deep expertise in methodologies ranging from software engineering of the computational continuum to hybrid classical-quantum systems, all aimed at driving advancements in computational sustainability.

Our research group, supported by FWF, FFG, and various industrial collaborations, is focused on pioneering foundational concepts such as transprecision in hybrid (classical-quantum) systems, and developing innovative mechanisms for code offloading. Additionally, we are dedicated to creating digital twins of man-made and biological objects, with a strong emphasis on maintaining and enhancing sustainability.

Your profile:

  • Completion of an appropriate doctorate and in-depth knowledge in one of the following areas: High-Performance Computing, Computational Sustainability, Edge/Cloud Computing
  • Experience in national and international research cooperations, project management and presentations
  • Experience in teaching and publication activities as well as interest and pleasure in research and work/support with students
  • Organizational and analytical skills as well as a structured way of working
  • Excellent track record and publications in top venues
  • Excellent command of the English language. Knowledge of German (level B2) or willingness to learn it
  • Excellent communicative skills and team competencies

Ivona Brandić

Head of the HPC Group

Ivona Brandić is a Professor at TU Wien. In 2015 she was awarded FWF START prize, the highest Austrian award for young researchers. She received her PhD degree in 2007 from TU Wien. In 2011 she received the Distinguished Young Scientist Award from TU Wien for her project on the Holistic Energy Efficient Hybrid Clouds. Her main research interests are cloud computing, large scale distributed systems, energy efficiency, QoS and autonomic computing.

Vincenzo De Maio

Project assistant

Vincenzo De Maio received his PhD in 2016 at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. His research in the area of parallel and distributed systems comprises energy-aware Cloud computing and scheduling. Since 2017, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Information Systems Engineering of the TU Wien. He authored different conference and journal publications on the topic of energy efficiency and modeling for Cloud and Edge computing.

Alessandro Tundo is a Postdoctoral Researcher and a former visiting researcher from September 2022. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca in 2024. His research interests include cloud continuum monitoring, self-adaptive systems, and sustainabile computing.

He received his master’s degree in Computer Science in 2015 from The University of Split, Croatia. Meerzhan Kanatbekova is a PhD student at the HPC Group at TU Wien, Austria. She received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 2018 from Pamukkale University, Turkey and her Master's degree in 2022 from TU Wien. Her research interests include Mathematical Modelling, Quantum Computing for Scientific Applications, and Machine Learning.

Sabrina Herbst is a PhD student at TU Wien, and a Project Assistant (Prae-Doc, FWF) at the HPC Research Group. She received her master's degree in Data Science in 2023, and her bachelor's degree in Business Informatics in 2021 from TU Wien as well. Her main research interest is Quantum Computing, specifically, Machine Learning, Algorithms and HPC integration.
